Aim
The goal of the last of four inventories is to investigate the plant genomics landscape outside Europe in order to assess Europe's competitiveness. Like task 3, which investigates the ERA-PG countries, this task aims at making an inventory of the different economic areas impacted on by plant genomics and estimating which crops/species, technology facilities and industry/academic sector would be interested in taking part in international cooperation, participating in joint calls in plant genomics in Europe.
Approach
This inventory investigated the landscape of plant genomics in seven countries outside Europe: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, Korea and USA. Information was gathered through a questionnaire sent to contactpersons at funding agencies.
Topics
The inventory starts with a list of the economic sectors (agriculture, agrochemical industry, agrifood industry and Biotech industry) and the major crops in terms of economic importance in each country. Then, each sector was surveyed to determine the importance of plant genomics in research activities. Plant genomics activities were also mapped in terms of budget, species and related programmes in academic areas (outside of national programmes). A listing of pre-existing international plant genomics cooperation (mostly through RTD programmes of FP5&FP6) was made, showing that international cooperation in plant genomics is already being carried out in Europe on specific crops. Finally, the consumers’ attitude towards GMOs was surveyed in each country, as an indicator of what could be the populations’ feelings about future international cooperation in plant genomics.
