1st European Summer School "Plant genomics and Bioinformatics"in Ljubljana (Slovenia)

The first European Summer School “Plant Genomics and Bioinformatics” will take place in Ljubljana (Slovenia) from 22nd – 31st August. The main topic of the first Summer School will be Micro Array experiments and their statistical analysis. However, one glance at the program will show that the theoretical part has been set more broadly this year already. http://www.eu-summer-school.org serves as an information portal. The Summer School is aimed at postgraduates and young researchers in Central and Eastern Europe. The attendance fee for the two-week course is 300 Euros. The number of participants this year is limited to 16 “pupils”. The summer course consists of a theoretical and a practical part with experiments in the lab and computer exercises. All lectures and practical exercises will be published in a course handbook. According to current plans this is to be provided free of charge to all interested institutions, scientists and students. In addition the handbook will be available as download in PDF-format on the Summer School web site.

The European Summer School “Plant Genomics & Bioinformatics” will be organized annually in different European countries under varying themes. For the beginning this year the organizers have limited themselves mainly to a bilateral cooperation between Slovenia and Germany. However, they hope that further countries and research organizations will participate in the planning, organization and implementation of future summer schools. Discussions within the framework of the ERA-NET Plant Genomics as well as with colleagues from Poland and Hungary have signalized such a greater interest already. The second summer school is to be organized in Germany in 2006.

The Summer School is organized by the Fedral Ministry of Education and Research in Germany (BMBF), Slovenian Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, German Plant Genomics Programme GABI, Max-Planck-Institute of molecular Biology Potsdam-Golm Germany, University of Potsdam Germany, National Insitute of Biology Ljubljana Slovenia and the National Centre for Functional Genomics and Microarray Technology Ljubljana Slovenia.
